On January, 27 specialized school number 47 hosted a Kendo presentation for pupils of junior and middle school that was organized by joint initiative of the school’s management and Federation of Kendo, Iaido, and Jodo of Ukraine. The purpose of the event was acquaintance of children with Kendo and intention to build a foundation for development and popularization or this martial art among pupils of secondary and specialized schools.
The presentation was divided in two parts. The first part was intended for small children, while the second one for the pupils. The total duration of the event was approximately one hour. During this time Mr. Hiroki GODAI, the President of the Federation of Kendo, Iaido, and Jodo of Ukraine, and other Kendo practitioners demonstrated the basic elements of our martial art. Another required part of the presentation was demonstrative duels. But the most interesting and exciting moment for the spectators seemed to be their direct participation in the presentation in role of Kendo practitioners. So, there were dozens of volunteers to try on BOGU (armor) and hit one time or two with SHINAI (bamboo sword) on MEN (helmet). The bravest participants were presented with symbolic prizes. It should be mentioned with respect about special activeness of girls. Some of them even dared to combat with each other.
Undoubtedly both the participants and spectators enjoyed it very much and gained a lot of interesting experience and feelings.
It should be mentioned that Kendo in Japan has close links with education, has long-standing tradition, and is integral part of schooling and upbringing of the youth. Moreover, Kendo is included to educational program of schools and universities of Japan. We expect that specialized Kendo clubs for children will be opened in our country soon.
We would like to thank the management of the specialized school No. 47, namely its Principal Neketska Svitlana Mykolayivna and Deputy Principal Zinchenko Svitlana Volodymyrivna for the cooperation and assistance with Kendo development.
